Do Ductless Air Conditioners Need Maintenance?

Posted on: 17 March 2022

Ductless air conditioners are becoming more common in homes across America. A big part of this is that they're supposed to cost less and be easier to manage than central air conditioning. But does that mean you don't have to do maintenance with a ductless air conditioner?

Do Ductless Air Conditioners Need Maintenance?

Ductless air conditioners do need routine maintenance. Just like any other appliance, you can't just expect your ductless air conditioner to run forever.

Routine maintenance is important to extending the life expectancy of your ductless air conditioning system and keeping it running at peak efficiency. Even though it doesn't have ducts, it still has all of the same mechanical parts as any other air conditioner. The only maintenance you avoid with ductless air conditioners is duct maintenance.

What Kind of Maintenance Do Ductless Air Conditioners Need?

Ductless air conditioners have several components that need to be maintained, including the compressor, evaporator coil, blower, filters, and more. Depending on the make and model of your unit, these maintenance tasks may differ slightly but will probably include either checking or replacing worn-out parts.

Cleaning is another big part of ductless air conditioner maintenance. Without regular cleaning, dust and dirt build-up in the air conditioner over time. This reduces its airflow and cooling capacity. That means it will cost you more money to get the same cooling if you don't have your ductless air conditioner cleaned.

When Do Ductless Air Conditioners Need Maintenance?

In order for maintenance to be effective, you need to have it done regularly. If you wait until there are serious issues with your ductless air conditioner's performance before you perform maintenance, then repairing or replacing those problems could become very costly.

To keep your ductless air conditioning system efficient and reliable, you should schedule maintenance at least once or twice per year. Many people like to have maintenance done in the spring so they know their air conditioner will be ready to provide cooling when the summer heat arrives.

What Happens If You Skip Ductless Air Conditioner Maintenance?

Skipping ductless air conditioner maintenance is like gambling. You might get lucky and have it keep running forever, or you might have it go out on the hottest day of the summer.

On average, you're going to get better results if you do maintenance. No mechanical system can last forever, but HVAC service maintenance can help prevent the issues that can reduce its lifespan.
