How To Clean Your Air Conditioner

Posted on: 17 June 2019

If you are a homeowner, you have probably heard that you need to take care of your air conditioner, but how? It seems like people always talk about getting air conditioners ready for summer, but no one explains how to do it. In order to help you take better care of your investment, here are a few steps you should take each spring in order to ensure that your air conditioner is working properly and you are not wasting any money making the system work harder than it needs to work.

Power Down

The first step is to turn off the power to your air conditioner. This will ensure that you do not get hurt while working on it. Turn off our thermostat, and then find the outside electrical disconnect near your air conditioner and switch it to off. Then remove the cover or any insulation that you may have placed on the unit to winterize it. Sometimes large pieces of debris can get caught under these coverings, despite your best efforts to avoid them. Put on some work gloves and eye protection and remove any pieces of debris that you can see.

Apply Cleanser

Once you have any large pieces of debris cleaned off, the next step is to clean the coils of the air conditioner. This is done by applying an air conditioner coil cleaner liberally. Which type of coil cleaner you use can usually be found by researching which type of cleanser the manufacturer of your air conditioner suggests. Once you have applied the cleanser, wait 5-10 minutes until it begins to foam. Scrub the cleanser with a soft bristled brush. Then wash it off by attaching a sprayer attachment to your hose and dousing it with enough water to get it all off. You will probably be surprised by how much dirt comes off.

Power On

Once you have finished cleaning your air conditioner, make sure to turn the exterior power back on. Otherwise, it will obviously not work. When the summer is over, it is wise to insulate and cover your air conditioner once again to try and limit the amount of dirt that it accumulates over the winter.

Cleaning the coils of your air conditioner yearly can save you money because your air conditioner will not have to work so hard to get air through the coils that were once blocked with dirt.  This can also improve your health since you will be breathing in cleaner air.
