4 Signs You Need A New Air Conditioner

Posted on: 10 June 2015

There's nothing as refreshing as escaping into your cool air-conditioned home on a hot summer day. However, if your air conditioner isn't working as well as it should, there's no relief from the sweat and uncomfortable heat. If you're system's been on the fritz, a repair may only be a short-term solution. You may need to replace the entire system. Check out these four common signs that central air conditioner repair or replacement is needed.

Your Current System Is Old

Air conditioners don't last forever. A typical unit lasts 10 to 15 years, and as they age, they become less effective and efficient. If your system is nearing the end of its life, it may just be more effective to have it replaced. Even if you have it repaired, it won't work as well as it used to or as well as a new system will. If, however, you are planning on selling your home, don't waste the money. A new air conditioner won't increase the value of your home. On the other hand, a broken system may detour homebuyers, so, in this instance, having it repaired could be a good idea.

Your System Uses a Dangerous Refrigerant

Another problem with older systems is that they aren't as green as newer ones. Even if your system is only a few years old, it may use R-22 refrigerant. The EPA discovered that R-22 was the most commonly used refrigerant in air conditioners before January 1, 2010. However, the EPA discovered that this refrigerant negatively affects the ozone layer. As a result, they are attempting to phase out its use by 2020.

While manufacturers are no longer allowed to make systems that use R-22, you don't have to get rid of your system, and you can still have it repaired. However, R-22 is expensive now, so the repairs may not be worth the money, especially since you'll have to replace the system soon anyway.

It Keeps Breaking Down

If you keep your system well-maintained and it still keeps breaking down, you may be wasting your money on repairs. This is especially the case if the system keeps breaking down during peak hours. It may be a sign that something more serious is wrong or that you are putting too much strain on the system. Common signs associated with breakdowns include unusual noises, smelly odors, uneven temperatures, dust and humidity problems.

One or two repairs every few years is fine, but if you have to have major repairs every season, you'll end up spending significantly more in the long run when you combine the cost of repairs and the eventual replacement.

Your Energy Bills Keep Increasing

A glaring sign that you need a new air conditioner is a rise in your energy bills. Central air conditioning is far from the most energy-efficient option available, but there are newer ENERGY STAR systems that can save you up to 20 percent on your cooling costs. If you already have an ENERGY STAR system but still feel your energy bills are getting out of hand, check your ducts. Forced-air systems are notorious for leaking air. In fact, in most homes ductwork allows between 10 and 30 percent of air to escape into crawlspaces, attics and basements, which forces you to use more energy.

Stop struggling with your malfunctioning air conditioner and discover the comfort of a cool home again. These four warning signs signal the need for a new system, so if you've noticed any or all of them, it's time to take action.
